EMPLOYEE AND LABOR RELATIONS

Employee and Labor Relations is concerned with preventing and resolving problems involving employees which stem out of or affect work situations. In addition, Employee Relations recognizes employees for service contributed to the Pace community and provides assistance with professional growth.

At the heart of labor relations is the desire of both management and labor to create an efficient and effective organization. When this happens, management is planning, organizing and directing work such that employees understand their roles and responsibilities in a way that they can produce the desired outcomes. There is a healthy work environment   and strong working relationships amongst everyone. The employees have an opportunity to contribute and each feels valued as part of the collective effort of the unit. A mutual respect exists between management and employees. Life is good and everyone is happy

Achieving and sustaining this ideal state does not always occur; and some might argue, never fully happens.  Employees do not always meet expectations, conflict and other factors challenge group dynamics, laws and other compliance issues  exist, and sometimes  managers and supervisors do not lead or address a given situation well. The domain of labor relations exists in a dynamic environment

While the preference of managers and supervisors is to lead emphasizing the upside, they also need to understand their responsibilities and be able to address the downside. The module on labor relations will focus on what managers and supervisors need to know and do, particularly when there are performance issues

To Improve Employee and Labor Relation in an Organization

Create an open dialogue

It is important for you to ask your employees about how you can improve. Establishing a dialogue between you and your team will not only provide you with valuable insight but also make your team feel valued.

When your team offers suggestions for improvement, make sure they know you hear and value their opinions. Try implementing processes that they suggest. They may be more motivated to work toward a goal if they helped create the steps to get there

Communicate the company's mission and vision

Help employees understand how their work fits into a broader organizational structure and how their roles relate to the company’s strategic vision. Sharing the company’s core values can create more fulfilling experiences.

You should regularly communicate changes in expectations, policies and procedures. People absorb information in different ways, so providing this information in both written and verbal formats can be helpful. You can send emails or hold team meetings when you need to inform employees of changes. Your team will appreciate it if you are as upfront and transparent as possible, so provide your team with as much information as you can to create a more productive workplace.

Make employees feel valued

Expressing gratitude and admiration for a job well done can significantly improve employee attitude toward the business and make individuals feel appreciated. Finding different ways to express gratitude helps you make every employee feel valued. Encourage positive reinforcement by identifying when employees do something well, even if it is something small.

Public recognition can be motivational for some personality types. This kind of appreciation also shows other employees the type of work ethic they can work toward. You may be able to create an Employee of the Month award to officially recognize an outstanding employee and offer an incentive for others to strive to meet this achievement

Promote work-life balance

Work-life balance is essential for most team members. Creating a work environment that gives employees the flexibility to pursue interests outside of the office will ultimately create a stronger workforce as well as better relations between employees and management. Options like paid time off, the ability to work from home, health benefits and flexible work schedules can be important components of work-life balance.

Work-life balance extends beyond workplace policies. Managers who are sympathetic to the issues that their employees experience outside of work can make a difference in not only that employee’s well-being, but their overall view of the company. Being supportive when employees need to take leave is an additional way to improve employee relations.

Offer career development opportunities

Employees who have the ability to learn and grow in their roles through career development opportunities are typically happier and more productive. It is helpful for employees to understand the career path for their position so they can set detailed goals and learn the skills they need to get to their next promotion.

When possible, you can ask employees about what kinds of skills and experiences they want to gain and adjust their roles or job requirements to help them achieve their workplace objectives. Your business may also provide tuition reimbursement for career development-related educational programs to help employees advance toward their overall goals. This will improve the quality of work employees produce and add value to the organization overall.

A mentorship program that connects junior employees with experienced professionals within the company is another way to build employee networks and help them feel more fulfilled at work. Mentors guide entry-level employees to develop actionable plans for achieving goals to excel in their career paths. They can also offer advice when their mentees experience a challenge in the workplace.
